February 17, 2023

I hope some of you were able to attend the Provost’s Ethics Colloquium on ChatGPT yesterday evening.  Matt Hickey and the eight panelists provided a thought-provoking and insightful discussion of the opportunities and dilemmas presented by ChatGPT and other “AI” organic language generators (I promise this tip was not written by ChatGPT).  I had not appreciated the potential effects on human society aside from the impacts on teaching and learning.  I see several parallels with social media.

For this week’s tip, I wish to call attention to the “Inclusive STEM Teaching Project” organized and facilitated by Akiko Nakamura (Chemistry), Kayleigh Keller (Statistics), and Arlene Nededog (CNS).  These workshops are funded by NSF and offered on Mondays between March 6 and April 17, 2023.  For more details see the attached flyer.

Enjoy the return to spring weather for a few days, Paul
