Introducing Diversity in Chemistry
Ries, K. (n.d.). Introducing Diversity in Chemistry. Diversity in Chemistry. Retrieved June 9, 2023, from https://sites.google.com/view/diversityinchemistry/home.
Diversity in Chemistry is meant to change the narrative and provide a method for interjecting diversity easily into your classroom. The website provided/ cited is organized by subdiscipline. In each discipline, chemists are placed in chronological order based on birth year when birth years are provided. Introducing a diverse chemist at the beginning of each class or chapter can not only heighten visibility, but hopefully provide powerful role models for students of diverse backgrounds.
Powerpoint Packages
Here are pre-made PowerPoint sets to help assist you with integrating these chemists more easily in your lecture. If you put them at the beginning of the semester, it makes it easier to spend 2-5 minutes at the beginning of each class discussing these chemist’s amazing accomplishments!

Other Resources
DiversifyChem
The DiversifyChem site aims to help symposium organizers, award committees, search committees, etc. identify chemists who might diversify their pool.
SACNAS
The Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science is a society that aims to further the success of Chicano/Hispanic and Native American students in obtaining advanced degrees, careers, leadership positions, and equality in the STEM field.
ASLCORE
ASLCORE is a Deaf-centric project which honors and celebrates Deaf culture and American Sign Language. Our primary value is that all ASLCORE sign creations be generated by Deaf users of ASL. The content experts must be Deaf. They need not have ASL as their L1, however they must be fluent enough in sign to be able to communicate their content clearly and accurately to the translation team, and also understand the translation team questions/comments/discussion without an interpreter. The translators must be “sign masters” who possess native fluency in ASL. Each sign must be agreed upon by the team by consensus, however if an impasse does arise, there can be two versions of the sign if everyone agrees.
Queer Science
Connecting queer and trans high school students to their passion in STEM. Join graduate students, postdocs, professors and professionals in conducting experiments in microbiology, environmental chemistry, physics, and engineering, and engage in dialogue about the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ scientists.
500 Queer Scientists
A visibility campaign for LGBTQ+ people and their allies working in STEM and STEM-supporting jobs — a group that collectively represents a powerful force of scientific progress and discovery. 1,625 stories and counting!
Scientist Spotlights
The Scientist Spotlights Initiative empowers middle/high school, college, and university science educators to implement inclusive curricula that help ALL students see themselves in science. We provide access to easy-to- implement assignments/activities that link course content to the stories of counter-stereotypical scientists.
National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers
NOBCChE is a non-profit professional organization dedicated to assisting black and other minority students and professionals in fully realizing their potential in academic, professional, and entrepreneurial pursuits in chemistry, chemical engineering, and allied fields. We invite you to browse our website, engage with us on social media, talk to our members, attend our annual conference and discover the NOBCChE spirit for yourself!
AISES
The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is a national nonprofit organization focused on substantially increasing the representation of Indigenous peoples of North America and the Pacific Islands in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) studies and careers.
LGBTQ+ Biologists and Chemists
There is no question about the importance of diversity in the chemistry and biology worlds. However, in the past the foremost participants have been white males and the professions have not been particularly successful, nor active, in attracting diversity. Having diversity allows complex scientific issues to be addressed from multiple angles, encouraging innovation in their fields of study.
Minority Postdoc
This is the premier web portal on the minority postdoctoral experience featuring news, articles, resources, and events about jobs, career advice, professional development, funding, fellowships, mentoring, and diversity issues.

BlackInChem was founded in 2020 and was inspired by a series of “BlackinX” weeks that were created in response to #BlackBirdersWeek. Since 2020, BlackInChem has increased its online presence, connected Black chemists in the US and Europe, and catalysed a conversation regarding the need for greater representation of Black chemists.
National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals (NOGLSTP)
Welcome to the website of Out to Innovate™, formerly known as National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals (NOGLSTP). We are still the same organization, but are rebranding to have an all inclusive name so that all LGBTQ+ people in STEM will know that they are welcome and included in our advocacy and programming. During this rebranding process, you will start to notice changes to our name, logo, website layout and content, membership management system, and much much more! We are so excited to begin this transformation!
