Career Preparation Roadmap

How can you best prepare for a career in your chosen industry throughout your time in college? The Career Preparation Roadmap breaks down how to set yourself up for success during each year of your academic career. The Career Preparation Roadmaps also outline common employers and job titles to keep an eye out for in your job search, factors that contribute to your success in landing a job post-grad, and additional resources to help you along the way.

Statisticians find employment in a wide range of industries including medicine (evaluating new medicines and medical treatments), computing, business, market research, natural resources, government, and more. Almost every industry has a statistician or a group of statisticians somewhere in the organization. Graduate school is another pathway after graduation. Many of our undergraduate majors have continued on to graduate school in statistics, either at CSU or other universities. Almost all statistics majors are able to find work in this field and/or gain entrance to graduate school after successfully completing a statistics degree.

Join a student organization relevant to statistics

Year 2

Go to the Career Center to discuss job/internship search strategies, create a resume and write a cover letter and tips for interviewing
Apply for undergraduate internship options
Explore research opportunities

Year 3

Run for a leadership role in a student organization
Update your resume and/or cover letter for internships or on-campus jobs
Learn about graduate school options

Year 4 +

Present research at CSU
Submit a poster presentation for a local conference
Attend many working events to meet employers
Ask three professors and/or employers to be professional references
Meet with the Career Center to prepare for the job search or graduate school applications and to update your resume and/or cover letter
