How can you best prepare for a career in your chosen industry throughout your time in college? The Career Preparation Roadmap breaks down how to set yourself up for success during each year of your academic career. The Career Preparation Roadmaps also outline common employers and job titles to keep an eye out for in your job search, factors that contribute to your success in landing a job post-grad, and additional resources to help you along the way.

Biology majors are able to choose courses in basic biological sciences while allowing room for courses in biological fields of interest. This major is especially useful for students interested in meeting course requirements for various professional schools, including veterinary school. It is also useful for students wanting to meet the requirements for secondary teachers of biological science. A student can also choose this major if they are interested in graduate work in basic biology and applied biological sciences.

Year 1

Go to the Career Center’s drop-in hours or schedule an appointment
Log into Handshake, the CSU Career Center’s online location for on-campus jobs, internships, and careers. Find an on-campus job and work for 10+ hours/week
Select a minimum of 12 credits from a field as well as a minimum of 6 credits in 2 additional fields
Join a student organization relevant to biology

Year 2

Go to the Career Center to discuss job/internship search strategies, create a resume and write a cover letter and tips for interviewing
Apply for summer internships or research opportunities related to biology
Consider adding a botany minor
Learn more about possible research opportunities in the department

Year 3

Run for a leadership role in a student organization
Update your resume and/or cover letter for internships or on-campus jobs
Apply for an undergraduate internship
Learn about graduate school options in the Department of Biology

Year 4 +

Present research at CSU
Attend many working events to meet employers
Ask three professors and/or employers to be professional references
Meet with the Career Center to prepare for the job search or graduate school applications and to update your resume and/or cover letter
