Commencement Ceremony

Date: Saturday, December 16, 2017

Time: 6:00 pm

Location: Moby Arena, CSU Campus

The College Commencement Ceremony individually recognizes bachelor’s graduates and their achievements. The Graduate School honors Master’s and doctoral graduates in a separate ceremony. For Graduate School information, please call (970) 491-6817.

Check-in and Line-up

Check-in starts at 4:30 p.m. for all graduates in the Intramural Gym of the Moby Arena.  You will pick up your name card, which you will give to the announcer, who will read your name, major, and honors.  Please arrive early, as this may be a time-consuming process with the large number of students graduating this semester.

You must be checked in and lined up with your department by 5:30 p.m.

Event Conduct Guidelines

The College Commencement Ceremony is the capstone of your academic experience at CSU. This public event reflects upon you as an individual and the College and University as a whole. Please recognize the rights of other students and their guests to enjoy the ceremony free from disruptive or otherwise inappropriate behavior.

In accordance with Commencement policies, robes, purses, etc., may be inspected as you enter. Prohibited items are not allowed and will be confiscated. All attendees should refrain from using air horns.

Prohibited items not allowed in Commencement and Commissioning venues include the following:

  1. Alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs carried in by patrons
  2. Glass bottles or metal cans
  3. Ice chests or large coolers
  4. Bota bags or wine skins
  5. Sticks, bats or clubs, including any attachments
  6. Fireworks, firearms or other weapons, or simulated weapons
  7. Air horns, bullhorns or other artificial noisemakers.
  8. Framed backpacks.
  9. Animals other than certified guide dogs for the disabled.

Student Regalia – Caps & Gowns

Order your cap, gown, and tassel in advance online via the Commencement homepage and click Get Your Cap & Gown.  The deadline for ordering student regalia is Wednesday, November 8, 2017.

Tassels are worn on the right side and moved to the left during the ceremony.  Your mortarboard caps should be worn level, not tilted.  In recognition of the tradition and dignity of the graduation ceremony, please do not decorate your regalia in any way.


All regalia pick ups must be completed by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 16.


All gowns must be returned to the Intramural Gym, Moby C-Wing, immediately following the ceremony. You may keep your cap and tassel. Late charges will be incurred for late returns.

Seating and Tickets

There is no reserved seating or distribution of tickets.  You may invite as many guests as you wish. Please do not block off rows of seats as a courtesy to other guests. Guests should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony at 6:00 p.m.

Disabled Seating/Access: The first two rows of the north and south sides of Moby are designated for those guests who need assistance, who have mobility issues. The first  three rows in section P are for hearing impaired, and the four “corners” are designated for wheelchair-guests and a companion. Access into Moby can be via north and south entrances, although the north entrance is the easiest for dropping off guests as it faces the street. Graduates will receive a diploma cover during the ceremony – actual diplomas are mailed approximately six to eight weeks after commencement. If you cannot attend the ceremony, you may pick up a diploma cover at the Registrar’s Office at no charge. Please submit mailing requests to; the postage cost is $5.00 per cover for U.S. mailings.
