Science and Mathematics Tutorial Hall

Mission

Our mission is to foster excellence in core math and science courses through interactive learning, enabling students to achieve long term success in the University.

History

The Science and Mathematics Tutorial Hall is a function of the Undergraduate Retention Programs in the College of Natural Sciences. The Tutorial Hall first opened in the spring of 1990, tutoring 15 courses with 35 student contacts. Currently, there are 35 tutors and 4 front desk staff. Free tutoring is available for 30 courses. Each semester, an average of 3,000 students visit the tutorial hall.

Hours and Location

The Science and Mathematics Tutorial Hall is located in the basement of Ingersoll Hall. Ingersoll is on the Southwest corner of campus near Shields and Lake. Commuter students are allowed to park in lots 195 and 240 or off campus.

Hours of operation are Sundays through Thursdays, 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Specific course tutoring times are posted under the current tutoring schedule. The tutorial hall is closed during finals week and university holidays.

Students are encouraged to use the SAFE Walk program offered by the CSU Police Department. Call 491-1155 and a community safety officer will happily walk with you to any location on campus during evening hours.

How to get the most out of tutoring

The Science and Mathematics Tutorial Hall is a welcoming environment for students to increase understanding of math and science. Our friendly staff is willing to clarify key concepts by answering questions, working through problems, and reviewing material.

Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of tutoring:
  1. Attend course lectures and review text material
  2. Try your homework before visiting the tutorial hall
  3. Identify your strengths and weakness by preparing specific questions and objectives
  4. Be an active learner. Ask questions until you are confident with the material
  5. Plan ahead and expect larger groups before exams and homework due dates
  6. Have a positive attitutde and a willingness to learn
