Resources for Finding Internships

You've looked in books, you've looked online and still not finding an internship.
You've spoken with employers and nothing seems to fit what you have in mind.
What do you do now?
Create your own internship! It takes work, but you may be
able to create your own internship that's just what you want to do. Here are
some resources to help you:
1. Family and Friends
- Ask them to help you come up with the top 10 organizations in your
geographic area with whom you might like to intern.
2. Chambers of Commerce
- Use a search engine to find a Chamber of Commerce in the geographic area
you are interested in - you might look under "Seattle Chamber of Commerce"
if you want an internship in Seattle.
- Follow the link for the "on line directory."
- Chambers will list members by categories such as accountants, engineering, etc.
- Find the company web site and go to their site for more information.
3. Business Journal for Your Region
- Use a search engine to look up business journals in your area.
- You might try "Northern Colorado Business Reporter."
- Look at their members section.
4. Phone Book
- Yellow Pages - many non-profit organizations are listed under the
"Association" section.
- Blue Pages - human service agencies, local, state and federal government
agencies are listed here.
5. Websites for Professional Organizations in Your Career Field
- For example: American Psychological Association (APA), American Chemical Society (ACS)
6. Internet Search Engines
- Do a Google search for "Internships in Working with youth"
or "Internships for Physics majors."
7. Federal Government Internships
- If you think you want to work for the Federal Government AFTER graduation,
having an internship with them before you graduate is a MUST! Visit
www.studentjobs.gov and start applying.
8. The Career Center at Colorado State University
When you go to an organization link on the web, you can search for "internships" if
they have their own search engine or look for sections labeled "Careers, Human Resources or
Contacts" Some organizations will list internships in their own section.
